Our architect got going very quickly with the plans & we got our planning permission at the first attempt in early December. We appointed a quantity surveyor and on December 23rd 2009, the tender pack went out to the short-listed building contractors. I'd been interviewing builders for a few months, and had a nice short-list of hopefully competent contractors. Tender responses came back more-or-less on time, and we appointed the contractor by end of January 2010, and they took possession of the site by mid February. All in all we are delighted to have got cracking in such good time - due mostly to my great planning, a good architect & QS, and the incentive that every week in our rented house is money wasted!
May - October 2009: In the beginning there was mould...
This is what the original house looked like when we started. The wife found the plot in May 2009 and we finally completed the purchase on 8th October 2009 - on the outside the house looked OK, but inside it was a mouldy old ruin, with rotten floor-boards, mould growing over all walls, ceilings & surfaces, a broken window or 2, and general neglect throughout. You could hardly breath the air inside for fear of contracting something nasty.
